LA PORTE CITY - A new memorial was dedicated Saturday, honoring the men and women in the community who served their country.
Tribute to Veterans on the corner of Main and Chestnut streets was completed May 23 and was the site of the city's Memorial Day celebration two days later, said David Williams, commander of American Legion Post 207.
A path of bricks bearing the names of veterans leads to five upright stones, one with a general message and four representing the U.S. Army, Air Force, Navy and Marines. Two benches recognize the Merchant Marines and Coast Guard.
The service included the raising of the American flag, National Anthem and a guest speaker, Capt. Garrett Gingrich of Waterloo, an Iraq war veteran who served with the 1st Battalion, 133rd Infantry Regiment of the Iowa Army National Guard. Gingrich lived in La Porte City as a child, Williams said.
World War II veteran Wilbur Engelkes, who served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946, was among other speakers during the event. He cited dates that significantly affected his family.
"Like December 7, 1941," Engelkes said.
Japanese pilots attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii that day, which prompted the United States to enter World War II.
"There were four boys in our family of draft age at that time," Engelkes said.
His son, Joe, later served during the Vietnam War.
Representatives of military branches were recognized Saturday as well, including Travis Fleshner, Army; Tony Paulus, Air Force; Dick Hutton, Navy; and Dan Craft, Marines.
Planning for the $25,000 project began more than two years ago. The memorial is being paid for with donations from individuals, groups and businesses along with proceeds from more than 200 engraved brick pavers purchased by family members and friends. The pavers honor those who served or who are serving the country.
Donations continue to be accepted. About $4,000 is still needed.
To order a brick, call David Williams at (319) 215-1005. A 4-by-8-inch brick with three available lines for print costs $50, while an 8-by-8-inch size with four lines is $100.
