WATERLOO -- An engineering firm could be retained this week to begin designing a new fire station in the Crossroads Center area.
Waterloo City Council members are scheduled Monday to consider a professional services agreement with StruXture Architects for 18,112 to design a new Fire Station No. 8, to replace the existing station on the corner of La Porte Road and San Marnan Drive.
Council members voted Aug. 25 to sell the station for 2.1 million to First Equity Group of Rolling Meadows, Ill., which is planning to replace it with a pharmacy. The sale contract is subject to the city finding a suitable location nearby to built a new fire station within the available funds from the sale.
Other scheduled council business includes:
ï½ Mayor Tim Hurley's recommendation to appoint Larry Smith as superintendent of Waste Management Services. Smith has been serving as the acting superintendent following the death of Tim Shea in September.
Council members will also be asked to approve an exception to a policy requiring department heads to live within the Waterloo city limits. Smith has lived in Evansdale since being hired by the city in 1989.
ï½ The final reading of an ordinance adding the University Avenue and La Porte Road commercial corridors to the Consolidated Urban Revitalization Area, which grants property tax breaks on the value of new construction project or improvements to existing buildings.
ï½ A resolution to extend the city's curbside yard waste collection program for two weeks, through Dec. 12. The original schedule called for the service to end Nov. 28.
The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Monday in the council chambers on the second floor of City Hall. Committee meetings include: Public Safety, 4:50 p.m.; Human Resources, 4:55 p.m.; and Finance, 5 p.m.
