WATERLOO - Registration fees for some motor vehicles will increase Jan. 1 under a law designed to boost funding for roads in Iowa.
New and used pickups less than 3 tons will rise from $65 to $150 per year for vehicles with less than 7 years old.
Older trucks will pay fees gradually phased to $50 per year.
For the 2010 model year and beyond the fee will remain about $150 for 3 tons for pickups used for commercial or agricultural business.
But when used for personal use, the truck will be assessed registration fees by weight and list price, just like a car or sport utility vehicle.
The weight and list price for cars and SUVs will be adjusted so the minimum will be $50.
Title fees will increase from $15 to $25.
Registration fees on all trailers less than 2,000 pounds will increase from $10 to $20.
Trailers more than 2,000 pounds will go to $30.
All travel trailers will go from 20 cents per square foot to 30 cents per square foot.
Fees vehicles currently owned will not increase but will take longer to decline to the minimum of $50 at 12 model years.
December registration renewal notices were mailed recently by the Black Hawk County Treasurer's Office. Customers will receive two renewal notices - one for payment before Dec. 31 and one for payment after Jan. 1.
Officials encourage customers to examine their statements because they may wish to renew before Dec. 31 when fees may increase.
The changes are a result of Transportation Investment Moves the Economy in the 21st Century legislation.
