WATERLOO - Black Hawk County officials will conduct an administrative recount of a Dunkerton School Board race at 1 p.m. Monday in the board of supervisors office.
The unofficial results of the race show Mike Steffen with a one-vote victory over Cindy Rigdon, 153-152. However, a discrepancy in the number of ballots counted by hand in the race prompted county election officials to request the recount given the closeness of the race.
"A one-ballot discrepancy can make a difference in an election decided by one vote," said County Auditor Grant Veeder, commissioner of elections.
After the administrative recount, both candidates have the option of requesting another recount, but must let the board of supervisors know by 5 p.m. Monday.
"There's an 18-day window in which the recount would have to be completed," County Elections Manager KyleJensson said. "It depends on how quickly candidates can agree on their representation and the third party representation." That three-person board conducts the recount with election officials present.
The to-be-recounted Dunkerton race was not included in the board of supervisors official canvass of school election results Friday.
