PLAINFIELD - A Courier delivery worker escaped from a burning car following a crash while tending to her route earlier this month.
Donna Kromminga, 78, of Greene, then went about delivering newspapers.
Kromminga, who retired from the Red Fox Inn in Waverly, has been delivering about 180 papers each day for 10 years with the help of her husband, Everett.
She was driving her 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity near Plainfield Nov. 17 with high winds when the vehicle slipped into a ditch.
Kromminga was unable to open the doors, and the hot exhaust ignited the dry vegetation.
She fled through a window, and aside from a bruised leg that happened during the escape, she wasn't injured
A passerby, Dan Feckers, helped her out of the ditch. They watched as the flames claimed the car.
"There was nothing left of it ... They said you could only salvage the front bumper," she said.
Kromminga called her husband, who was also working a newspaper route. They ordered more papers to replace those she lost and hit the road.
"We got it all done," she said.
