meatgal...I'd be a little careful with the English 101" stuff, unless you know what you're talking about. Deere's is the proper possessive (because it is singular). When people say "Deere's" they are referring to "Deere's place." There is no Deere's for "Deere is."

Jimbo...That must be why worker's wages, over the past 30 years after inflation, have either maintained or declined for those at the bottom. Because of the uselessness of unions, correct?

Meanwhile, over that same time period, CEO's earn over 400 times what that same worker does, when it was 100 times more 30 years ago.

    Nah, no need for unions!

wouldn't Deeres' be the possessive and Deere's is used to replace Deere is....english 101...high school level.

Good grief; Deere's is the possesssive of Deere, so of course it's correct. On the other hand, Deeres's would NOT be correct because the name of the company is Deere NOT Deeres.

And yes, Unions were a very good thing at one time; not so much anymore.

xdfred.. What is REALLY lame is the fact we are even debating this and that the Courier still has it up on the board.

I have to apologise. You are correct. I looked up the use of an apostrophe. It is :
The superscript sign ( ' ) used to indicate the omission of a letter or letters from a word, the possessive case, or the plurals of numbers, letters, and abbreviations.

Your next mission, should you decide to accept it, is...
Go to the MANY web sites that came up when I Googled "Deere's John Deere" and inform them that they are WRONG in their usage of their own trademark name.
I'm sure you know .. this is an "Impossible Mission".
So I say... Who really gives a crap?

    1. Unions destroy the concept of individual achievement.
    2. Unions are in bed with the democrat party.
    3. Union fatcats are worse than coprorate CEO's."

Very true. The worse was in 76 when we went out on strike for what must have been two months. The Union Committee men were getting full pay and telling us to stick it out. We ended up getting almost the same as the initial offer. They when the layoffs hit, it was who you knew. People getting deviated if you had an in. I saw all that backroom crap take place.

I work at deeres, that is why I have an opinion on this issue."
So if you didn't work at "deeres" you wouldn't have an opinion?
"I have to wonder if some of the rest of you are jealous..."
    Nope.
"... or just unhappy with your own lives."
    Nope.
"The way criticism is slathered on with such a wide brush really scares me on what might happen if some of you had the power you crave."
Craving power? That would be the UAW. How about the sweet deal the UAW got from the feds with regard to GM, excuse me, I mean Obamamotors. And how about that card check bill? So, what power do we crave, especially compared to that?

funny stuff matty...united front? more like liberals pandering to socialism and obama. who in the world would vote to give fat, mafia types dues, then go out on strike?

unions are one of the reason production in this country has taken a back seat to other countries.

greed is the reason production in this country "has taken a back seat to other countries" and i'm continually amazed that Christians support this greed with their ballots and resources by electing officials who support such greed.

say no to abortion, but say yes to the c.e.o and shareholders who would rather outsource our labor to sweatshops, etc. to increase their profits.
    WWJD?

It's amazing to see the number of negative opinions about a subject most Americans know nothing about,UNIONS. How do you think American workers got a standard 8 hour work day? UNIONS. How do you think American workers got a 40 hour work week? UNIONS. How do you think working Americans got holidays off to spend with their families? UNIONS. How do you think American workers got health and safety regulations in this country? UNIONS. Do you think big companies just gave workers these things out of the goodness of their hearts? So go ahead and bash unions all you want if it makes you feel better, but one day when you're all working for 5 dollars a day, making Nike shoes and clothes for WalMart, you can all look back and say,"Remember the good old days." Oh,and by the way I know the people that counted the strike vote ballots. They are honest hard working people that live and work right here in your town. I'm sure they will be unhappy to hear that they have been lumped into the same category as Jimmy Hoffa and the Mafia.

Deeres doesn't pay that much more than other manufacturing companies. It would take months to go thru the hiring and training process. Many of us have two year degrees of specialized training,it may take a few weeks or more of a strike but another 6 year contract will get hammered out and those of you who don't have anything else to do can criticize and second guess another sector of our world.

If they chose to strike, I think that is one of the most foolish things that ANYONE could do right now. With jobs and the economy the way it is, there will be someone waiting on the sidelines to snatch up that position as soon as they walk out. There will be many that won't hesitate to cross a picket line to pay their bills and feed their families....and I don't and wouldn't blame them one bit.

I couldn't agree with xdfred more about our politicians not reading the bills! Why, does anyone recall that scene from Fahrenheit 9-11 when Michael Moore had to read the Patriot Act to Congress?

And who could forget this now classic? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/08/31/gop-rep-behind-great-whit_n_272589.html

hey fred way to take everything I said out of context."
    Evereything?
"I was referring to the article at hand and you bring up unemployment and war."
Yes. You alluded to not knowing how things are. I asked in what context? Unemployment?
"I have not spoken against the current administration at all and wonder where you read that into my comments."
Again, I didn't catch what you meant by how things are now.
"I have no problem with people having opinions but dont twist my words to fit your agenda."
Think what you wish. I wrote what you sounded like. You said the vote was not to strike. Fine. I referred to Hillary and others saying similar about the vote to go to Iraq. Then you talk about actually reading things completely before doing anything. I said it sounds like congressmen who sign bills then claim to have not read them. And I pointed out the stimulus bill, bailouts, and Obamacare. There have been countless examples of congressmen and Obama himself saying he hadn't read that part of the bill, etc. No one's twisting your words.

I will never cease to be amazed at how people earning minuscule wages in our society today; e.g., the folks who post on here, have been duped by those in positions of wealth to actually turn away from those who help gain better equality or better pay.

It's like helping out a lion ravage your village.

How are things today? Great? Unemployment, except government jobs, is up.
"And to reitterate we did not vote to strike."
And Hillary and Kerry never voted to go to war, just to pretend to go to war.
"This is a misconception that is brought about by people like you that fail to read details before you force your BS down our throats."
Sounds like you're criticizing congress, stimulus, and Obamacare.
"If you are not happy with the govt and/or the president of this country then leave. We would be better off without your negativety. "
