WATERLOO - A person described as a "young black male" was injured in a shooting in the parking lot of Kwik Star, 707 Broadway St., Monday afternoon.

Waterloo Fire Rescue paramedics took the man to Allen Hospital with an apparent gunshot wound to the torso area. No arrests have been made.

Capt. John Beckman of the Waterloo Police Department said they have named a "person of interest" in the case but he didn't say who it was.

Beckman said the use of Kwik Star survelliance cameras wasn't a major factor in identifying the person of interest.

He had no information about the victim's condition or identity.

Witness Jesse Hoffer was working in his mom's yard up the street when he heard five shots ring out about 1:15 p.m.

"I know somebody fired a gun," he said. He said within two minutes, police were on the scene.

Police have closed off Conger Street and the convenience store while they investigate the shooting. They have wrapped police tape around the gas pumps.

A woman, who didn't want to be identified, watched as crews investigated the area where eight shell casings were found near the gas pumps at Kwik Star.

"I'm just trying to make sure it's nobody close to me," she said.

Susan, a Kwik Star employee, was reporting to her 2 p.m. shift and was told she couldn't go inside her workplace.

"I just stopped over and briefly talked with the supervisor and she said 'Just go ahead and go home' and that my boss would call me," Susan said. "And she called me and said that I should come in. So I got ready and headed back here, and apparently I cannot go in. And that's all I know."

She said the Kwik Star is typically "very busy."

"There's a lot of customers coming and going all the time," she said. "It doesn't really slow down much."

She said the incident was "very alarming" and was waiting to get more information about when the store would open again.

No information about the victim's identity or condition is being released.
