WATERLOO - A Waterloo man who was arrested following a traffic stop was taken to the hospital after officers discovered he had been shot.

Police got a tip that 33-year-old Bernard Edwards was armed with a handgun and pulled over his purple minivan at 10:50 p.m. Sunday.

They noticed that Edwards had a gunshot wound, and he told police he had been shot earlier in the day by an unknown person in an alley behind the 400 block of Fowler Street, according to the police report.

Edwards was taken to Allen Hospital for a through-and-through gunshot wound to his right shoulder.

Officers also located a .22-caliber Burgo revolver in the vehicle and a bag of marijuana in his pocket.

The revolver found with Edwards had seven live rounds and one spent round in the cylinder, according to court records.

Police said he is barred from handling firearms because of a 2004 felony conviction in Michigan.

After leaving the hospital, Edwards, of 616 Fowler St., was arrested for carrying weapons, felon in possession of a firearm, possession of marijuana and driving while suspended.
