GRUNDY CENTER --- Witnesses presented a series of emotional accounts about discovering the body of 2-year-old Seth Kehoe and his injured older brother on the first morning of Michelle Kehoe's first-degree murder trial.
Kehoe, 36, of Coralville is accused of killing her 2-year-old son Seth and injuring another son Sean, 7, at the Hook-n-Liner pond near Littleton Oct. 26, 2008. Her proceedings were moved to Grundy County amid concerns about her ability to get a fair trial in Buchanan County.
Sean Kehoe, 7, of Coralville said in recorded interviews how his mother cut his throat, but he wasn't sure how.
"Your mommy is the one who hurt you?" said State Trooper Jim Smith.
"Yes," Sean said.
Smith said Sean was sitting in the family van at the time looking in the direction of Seth's body, which was in a wooded area off the passenger side.
Sean had a cut several inches long and about a half inch deep, said Rebecca Steinbron, a paramedic with the Jesup Ambulance Service.
He was taken to Covenant Medical Center, where he again told Black Hawk County Sheriff's Deputy Steve Petersen.
"I don't know, she cut (my throat) somehow," Sean Kehoe said.
Sean said he kicked his mom while she was cutting him, and then he passed out. He said he heard his brother Seth screaming while Michelle Kehoe was near him.
Michelle Kehoe looked down toward a table most of the morning. When the photos of her son were shown, she touched her mouth. Several of her husband Gene Kehoe's family members were present in the courtroom.
Prosecutors said Michelle Kehoe began planning the killing as far back August or September when she bought a knife and duct tape.
"Her elaborate and meticulous plannning of the murder of her two children had thus began," said Andrew Prosser, an assistant state attorney general.
Kehoe initially told authorities that she and her children were kidnapped by an unknown man. She later admitted to cutting her children's throats after police said Sean Kehoe told police she harmed him.
Debra Hinde, who lives near the pond, said she heard someone knocking on her door around 7:30 a.m. Oct. 27. When she looked outside, there was a person leaning against her door.
"I opened the door and this person fell in to my doorway," Hinde said.
The person, who later turned out to be Kehoe, had a cut on her neck and was covered in blood. Kehoe crawled inside the house while Hinde called 911. Later, she wrote two notes, one with her husband Gene's phone number and another one that said what happened to her:
"A man killed my boys and tried to kill me," she wrote.
Later, emergency workers went out to the pond to look for the two boys.
Shawn Even, a member of the Jesup Fire Department, said he found the body of Seth laying on the passenger side of the van in some brush. Inside the van, Sean was sitting with his knees to his chest.
Even said he saw a cut on Sean's neck.
"He said that's from his mom," Even said.
Next to Seth's body was a first-aid kit, Even said. Sean told him that it was "from him trying to help his brother."
Testimony in the case continues today.
