WATERLOO - Authorities began rounding up Waterloo residents Tuesday in connection with a methamphetamine ring the government alleges made $1 million.

The arrests came after a federal grand jury indicted 11 people from Waterloo, Oelwein and Phoenix, Ariz., on Monday.

Those named in the charges include:

- Joel Antonio Beltran Lopez and his wife, Yesenia Arbelaez, former Waterloo residents who now live in Phoenix.

- Thomas Blitsch of Waterloo.

- Dustin Corwin of Waterloo.

- Kyle "Crash" Geary of Oelwein.

- Melanie Hayes of Waterloo.

- William Mehlhorn of Waterloo.

- Oscar Ruiz of Waterloo.

- Jason Schatzle of Waterloo.

- Jamie Smith of Waterloo.

- Jerry Glen Weekley Jr. of Waterloo.

Beltran, Blitsch, Corwin, Geary, Mehlhorn, Ruiz, Schatzle, Smith and Weekley are charged with conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of a mixture containing meth.

Beltran, Arbelaez and Hayes are charged with money laundering involving drug proceeds.

Beltran, Smith, Ruiz and Weekley are also charged with other drug offenses.

The ring operated as far back as January 2005 and ran until Aug. 21, according to court records. Beltran allegedly distributed about 871 grams of a mixture containing meth on July 16, record state.

The government estimated the operation made about $1 million when it was in business. Authorities are seeking forfeiture of that amount in cash and assets from people involved in the group, records state.

Officials said some money has already been seized.

Both Beltran, Ruiz and Hayes have been arrested in Iowa, according to papers filed by the U.S. marshals.

Arbelaez was taken into custody in Phoenix, authorities said.

Geary was arrested Friday as part of a drug interdiction effort by the Arizona Highway Patrol. Officials said he was found with pounds of meth.

Authorities said the case is connected to a van load of cash discovered by Iowa state troopers in September.

Jesus Israel Aguilar Vega, 22, a citizen of Mexico, was pulled for speeding, and a trooper discovered 19 bundles of cash wrapped in scented dryer sheets hidden in a rear quarter panel.

The cash totaled $60,000, and Vega told authorities he had been paid to move the money from Waterloo to Arizona.

Vega was charged in connection with the cash and has since pleaded guilty.

Officials said Beltran was also in the van. He wasn't charged at that time, and authorities now say the money belonged to him.
