CEDAR FALLS -- If three's a crowd, then the field of candidates for mayor of Cedar Falls just got crowded.
Businessman Dave Sires submitted nomination papers to run for mayor on Thursday, the last day to file.
Sires ran for the Ward 4 council seat two years ago. In that race, he survived a three-man field to advance to a runoff election, but eventually lost to the incumbent, Kamyar Enshayan.
Sires joins incumbent Mayor Jon Crews and newcomer Gage Rewerts.
Crews has been mayor for the past 10 years and served in that role another 14 years split between two prior stints, as well as one term on the City Council. Rewerts is a 22-year-old junior at the University of Northern Iowa, two years younger than Crews when he first was elected in 1971.
Voters in Cedar Falls will have five city positions on the Nov. 3 ballot, but only two of those races feature contested races.
In addition to mayor, the other contested race is the at-large City Council seat being vacated by Axe Haugen. Earlier this year Haugen announced he would not run for re-election and three candidates stepped up to vie for the vacant seat.
Those candidates include Mark Niedert, a real estate agent; Nick Taiber, an engineer working in business development; and Gary Winterhof, a banker.
First Ward Councilman Tom Hagarty is running for re-election, as are Ward 3 Councilman John Runchey and Ward 5 Councilman Frank Darrah. No other candidates had filed papers to run for those seats by Thursday's deadline.
Thursday was the deadline to file papers for November's municipal election. Anyone still interested in seeking city office would have to mount a write-in campaign.
