WATERLOO - Banneker Timepieces will present a clock to Logan Middle School on Tuesday during its closing ceremony.
Waterloo native Derrick Holmes is chief executive officer of the Denver, Colo.-based company. His vision is to place a clock in every school in the nation to honor Benjamin Banneker. The clock will be placed at George Washington Carver Academy, which is replacing Logan next fall.
Banneker, a black mathematician and astronomer, is credited as the first person in America to build a clock, which was created entirely from wood in 1752.
A reception with more information about Holmes' project will be held after the closing ceremony. The reception runs from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. at the Talk Shop Cafe, 1015 E. Fourth St.
