CEDAR FALLS - As a young man, Charles Wright's communion with God gave him peace as a medic in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam.

More than 40 years later, Wright hopes his experience will encourage others. Earlier this year, Habukkuk Publishing of Canton, Mich. included Wright's story about listening to God in the book, "Game On: Becoming a Man Who Pleases God!" Ten authors contributed personal stories to the book, which is geared toward men.

Wright, with help from his wife and friends, put his story onto paper so that believers "have a heart to listen to God's voice." Wright, a supervisor for the Postal Service and an associate pastor at Gift of Life Church, isn't the only published author in his family.

His wife, Stephanie, shares her own story of faith in "Tal'i-tha Cu'mi: Mothers & Daughters Arise!" This book, put out by Habakkuk Publishing in 2008, includes stories by 10 female authors.

"It's not about defeat. It's about being victorious going through challenges as Christians," said Stephanie, who is the the first African-American assistant U.S. attorney for the Northern District of Iowa.

In her chapter, Stephanie wrote about a time when she said God spoke to her through a dream and called her to pray for a woman she'd never met. Years later, she said she met the reason for and the subject of her prayers.

Stephanie said sometimes people are so busy during the day that God uses dreams to get their attention.

"Through prayer we can change circumstances," she said.

Ruther Dixon of Waterloo said it's uplifting to read how ordinary people overcome tough situations. Topics covered in the women's book include sexual abuse, abortion and rejection.

"Both books are encouragement to anybody that, I would say, be in any situation of difficulty … ," Dixon said.

The public is invited to a book signing and sale from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 6 at the Holiday Inn in Cedar Falls. Refreshments will be served. Books can also be purchased by contacting Charles Wright at cswright3@mchsi.com or (319) 610-5322.

Proceeds will support Gift of Life's Charles George Missions for national and international mission work.
