IOWA CITY --- Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz has the hat trick.
And, as a result, he has reached a lofty place in Big Ten history.
Ferentz was named the Big Ten's coach of year for the third time Monday, joining Joe Paterno, Bo Schembechler and his mentor, Hayden Fry, as the only men to accomplish that.
Ferentz, who also won the award in 2002 and 2004, wasn't the only one to reap the rewards of Iowa's 10-2 regular season and second-place finish in the league. Seven of his players, including Bettendorf's Pat Angerer, earned first-team All-Big Ten honors.
Angerer, safety Tyler Sash, defensive end Adrian Clayborn and tackle Bryan Bulaga were named to the first team on the all-league teams selected by both the coaches and the news media. Bulaga was named the offensive lineman of the year by the coaches.
Three other Iowa players were put on the first team by the coaches and the second team by the media - cornerback Amari Spievey, tight end Tony Moeaki and guard Dace Richardson.
Angerer, ranked among the national leaders with 135 tackles, also is one of five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Award, which goes to the top defensive player in the country, but he has expressed skepticism over how worthy he is of any award.
"I don't think I played well enough this year, to be honest with you," he said. "There are a million things I could have done differently, could have done better."
However, he and teammates wholeheartedly endorsed the honoring of their coach.
"He's very focused but you can tell how much he cares about this team," Moeaki said of Ferentz.
Other Hawkeyes on the second team included center Rafael Eubanks (media and coaches), tackle Kyle Calloway (media), safety Brett Greenwood (media), receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos (coaches) and linebacker A.J. Edds (coaches).
In all, 19 Iowa players received some sort of mention on one of the two teams.
Illinois had just one player on the first two teams. Guard Jon Asamoah made the second unit.
Wisconsin running back John Clay was named the offensive player of the year by both the coaches and media. The defensive award was split between Michigan State linebacker Greg Jones (media) and Penn State tackle Jared Odrick (coaches), who did not even make the media's first team.
Wisconsin linebacker Chris Borland was named the freshman of the year on both teams.
