Waterloo native dies in California accident

WATERLOO --- Services were Monday for a former Waterloo man who died in a motorcycle accident in California last week.

David Earl Hatton, 43, of Sunnyvale, Calf., formerly of Waterloo and Traer, died Wednesday evening when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck or van in Sunnyvale, according to officials at the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office and Sunnyvale police.

The accident remains under investigation, according to authorities.

It happened at about 6:45 p.m. at the intersection of Mathilda Ave. and Indio Way, which is a commercial and residential area of the city.

Hatton was taken to Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, where he was pronounced dead, said Capt. Doug Moretto of the of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

The other driver wasn't injured and wasn't cited in the accident, Moretto said.

Hatton was born in Waterloo and graduated from West High School in 1984. His mother, Mary Hatton, still lives in Cedar Falls, and he has a number of brothers and sisters living in Northeast Iowa.
