Breakfast with Santa

Location: Heritage Farm, 7731 Zaneta Road, Hudson

Details: The first sleigh departs at 9 a.m. and runs every 45 minutes with the last departure at 1:30 p.m. Features include a horse-drawn sleigh ride to a cabin in the woods for hot cocoa, milk, juice or coffee and cinnamon rolls with Santa. Pictures will be taken.

Social Justice Advent Retreat

Time: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Waterloo Center for the Arts, 225 Commercial St.

Details: The Waterloo Catholic Worker House and the Cedar Valley Catholic Social Justice Network will co-sponsor this retreat. Frank Cordaro, co-founder of the Des Moines Catholic worker Community and Catholic peace activist, will examine the stories of Jesus' birth in the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. The retreat is based on reflections Cordaro originally composed while imprisoned for civil disobedience in 1998.

Details: Present a voucher at the cash register at the time of purchase during the book fair and a percentage of the net sale will be donated the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony. The vouchers also are good at B. Dalton Bookseller at College Square mall in Cedar Falls from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Citizen Science on Saturdays: 'The Art and Science of Soap Bubbles'

Time: 9 to 11 a.m.

Location: Center for Energy and Environmental Education, UNI campus, Cedar Falls

Details: Examine soap bubbles through the work of 17th- and 18th-century painters, as well as the chemistry and mathematics associated with soap bubbles.

Lollipop Concert 'Harmonious Handbells'

Time: 10 and 11 a.m.

Location: YWCA, 425 Lafayette St., Waterloo

Details: Friends of the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony will present the concert. It is designed for children ages 4-10. It will showcase the talents of Aaron Hansen, who will use 40 different handbells to perform a variety of pieces, including some holiday favorites. Prior to each concert, Bubbles the Clown will review the basic concert etiquette in an age-appropriate manner. In addition, the symphony's instrument petting zoo will be set up between the two performances for kids to explore.

Hometown Christmas

Location: Fredericksburg Community Center, Fredericksburg

Details: The Fredericksburg Women of Today are hosting the event. Activities include a silent auction, items for sale by several area crafters and vendors and children's activities. Santa will visit from noon to 2 p.m.

Holiday Open House at Effigy Mounds

Time: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Location: Effigy Mounds National Monument, Harpers Ferry

Details: No entry fee. Complimentary refreshments. Public can make ornaments out of natural materials between noon and 3 p.m.

Teddy Bear Roundup

Time: Today

Location: Blue Room Lounge, 201 Main St., Cedar Falls

Details: Teddy bears may be dropped off at the lounge on or before Saturday. The bears are donated to the Shriners Hospital and also the John Tracy Clinic (a hospital for hearing impaired children).

African Art as Theater: 'The Bwa Masks of the Gnoumou Family of the Village of Boni'

Details: Attend a free showing of this documentary film. The film features masks of the Bwa village.

Fun Bunch

Details: All aspiring artists are invited to the first Fun Bunch coloring contest. Children 3 to 11 will construct holiday gingerbread houses and complete an H & R Block coloring contest entry form.

Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart Look-alike Contest

DETAILS: Iowans will compete in look-alike contests from the Donna Reed Foundation in Denison and the Iowa Lottery.

Old Fashioned Christmas Program

Details: Short program will be given at intervals of a half-hour. Some of the fifth-graders from the North Butler Middle School are taking part in the program and also are helping with the decorating of the classroom.

'Plaid Tidings'

Details: Cedar Falls Community Threatre holiday musical. The show is the Christmas version of the popular musical play "Forever Plaid" and is often described as "Do-wop meets yuletide." Four guys since harmony in popular Christmas songs and songs from the 1950s.
