DES MOINES (AP) - The Des Moines Register has announced plans to cut 26 jobs as part of staff reductions by parent company Gannett Co.

Publisher Laura Hollingsworth says the newspaper will cut 12 full-time and three part-time positions. Another 11 positions will be left unfilled.

The reductions will be scattered through several departments as well as the Register's central Iowa weekly newspapers.

Layoffs will be completed by Wednesday, and severance packages will be given to employees whose jobs are eliminated.

Gannett on Thursday announced plans to eliminate 1,000 jobs, including 600 layoffs, at its newspaper operations in response to declining revenues due to an economic slump and movement of advertising dollars to Internet sites.

Arlington, Va.-based Gannett owns 84 daily newspapers and nearly 900 nondaily publications.
