WATERLOO - In the wake of Mayor Tim Hurley's announcement that he will not seek re-election, Ward 1 Councilman Reggie Schmitt made it official that he will seek the office.

Schmitt, 59, has been on the council the past five years. He currently serves as mayor pro tem.

"It has been an honor to serve as Ward 1 councilman for the past five and half years. I have strived to be fiscally responsible, represent all of Waterloo and support smart economic development throughout the city," Schmitt said.

Schmitt has been employed as a manager at John Deere for 37 years. He plans to retire late this summer. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Northern Iowa.

Most recently, Schmitt served as chairman of the ordinance committee on the council. In that time, the city changed ordinances regarding dangerous dogs and noxious weeds, while also adding administrative fees and streamlining the appeals process.
