CEDAR FALLS - University of Northern Iowa Public Safety has been in contact with the Black Hawk County Attorney's office regarding a 2-month-old child left in a locked vehicle Monday night.

Police were called to a car near the UNI soccer fields at about 8:20 p.m. Monday on a report of a baby left unattended in the vehicle. Windows were rolled up in the car and the parents were not around.

Public Safety officers broke a window to gain access to the vehicle. The baby was taken to a Waterloo hospital.

Lt. James Dally of UNI Public Safety said the department is continuing to look into the case.

"The investigation is continuing and any charges will be pending the investigation," Dally said.

UNI Public Safety has been in contact with the parents, but officials have not released their names.

"The baby has been seen by medical staff and treated and released (from the hospital)," Dally said.

Dally would not comment on whether the baby was released to its parents or to social services.

According to the National Weather Service, it was 88 degrees with a heat index of 93 degrees in the area at 8 p.m. on Monday.
