CEDAR FALLS - Resident University of Northern Iowa students would see a 4.1 percent increase in their tuition and fees under a proposal that will go before the Iowa Board of Regents next week.

Resident students at the University of Iowa and Iowa State University would see a 4.6 percent increase in tuition and fees under the same plan.

Base tuition for resident students would increase by 4.2 percent at each school.

At UNI, the increase would mean a $260.00 increase for in-state students, bringing the total for tuition and fees to $6,636. ISU and Iowa students would pay $6,650 and $6,824 respectively.

UNI students will be asked to pay an additional $12 - with another $23 diverted from the existing student services fee - for a newly created recreation fee that will help fund increased hours of access to the wellness center.

The board, which meets next Wednesday and Thursday in Ames, is not expected to vote on the increases.

Regents' policy states that the tuition increases must be based on the Higher Education Price Index, which measures the expected cost of inflation for colleges and universities. The projected index for the 2009-2010 school year is 4.2 percent to 5.6 percent.
