AMES - Iowa State football coach Gene Chizik announced today that tailback J.J. Bass has been suspended indefinitely.

Bass, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior from Altamonte Springs, Fla, did not suit up for the Cyclones' annual spring game. Alexander Robinson, the featured ballcarrier at the end of the 2007 season, did most of the work on the ground. He had 13 carries for 58 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown run.

Bass, though, has endured another setback. The junior college transfer was ISU's second-leading rusher a year ago, but a shoulder injury limited him over the final half of the season.

Now, his status is uncertain. Chizik did not disclose why Bass had been suspended, but he did leave the door open for reinstatement.

"You don't have to dig about where he's at," said Chizik. "There's no brushes with the law or none of that. But there's a standard we hold every guy on the team to, and if they're not doing it, they won't be a part of it.

I use the word 'indefinitely, which means there is a chance for him to return if he comes back to the standard we expect for him when it comes to things on and off the field."
