WATERLOO - A teen who was arrested Tuesday morning following a convenience store robbery now faces charges in connection with a earlier heist in late January.

Waterloo police this morning accused Martavis Lee Smith, 16, of 409 Independence Ave., of another count of first degree robbery in connection with the Jan. 28 holdup at Kwik Stop, 1761 Independence Ave.

Smith originally was taken into custody Tuesday in connection with an armed robbery at the Kum & Go convenience store at 1976 Franklin St.

In the earlier Jan. 28 crime, two people entered the Kwik Stop store at about 8:10 p.m. and demanded money. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun, which discharged during the incident, apparently accidentally according to police.

Court records state Smith received half of the proceeds from the earlier robbery.

In the 4 a.m. Tuesday robbery, a person with a handgun and his face covered had demanded money from the store employee and fled.

No injuries were reported. A chase ensued.

Police located Smith hiding under a porch in the 500 block of Rhey Street, said Waterloo Police Capt. John Beckman. Officers located a handgun as part of that investigation, Beckman said.

Bond for Smith has been set at $100,000.
