UNI shuts out Crusaders, 10-0

WATERLOO - A quartet of Panther pitchers combined to shut out Clarke College, helping the University of Northern Iowa baseball team (24-11) earn a 10-0 seven-inning win over the Crusaders Tuesday night at Riverfront Stadium.

Jason Smith (1-1) earned the win, pitching three innings and giving up three hits. Shuhei Fujiya pitched three innings of relief, striking out five and only giving up one hit. Brett Featherston was 3-of-3 at the plate with two RBIs, and Dane Embury was 3-of-4 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

Nick Weyrauch (1-5) was charged with the loss for Clarke (6-33).

In the bottom of the third, Embury hit a two RBI single with the bases loaded, and Brandon Douglas followed with a double to score one. Embury scored on a wild pitch, and Chris Lopez hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Douglas and put the Panthers in front, 5-0.

Embury hit a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Chris Lopez laced a double down the leftfield line with one out to give the Panthers runners on second and third. Featherston singled into right to score Embury and Lopez and give UNI a 7-0 advantage.

Cory Ege reached and advanced to second on an error to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Levi Ferguson singled up the middle to move Ege to third. Embury through the left side with one out to score Ege. Travis Hendrix followed with a double into left center to send Ferguson home, and Embury scored on a sacrifice fly by Corvin Kieger to give the Panthers the 10-0 lead.

UNI returns to action today when it hosts in-state foe Iowa at 6:30 p.m.
