CHARLES CITY - Four works of art commissioned for Central Park were unveiled Aug. 15.

Less than a month later, one of the pieces - a sculpture depicting a girl reading - was vandalized.

The girl's face has a scuff mark on the cheek, and half of the nose was broken off.

The vandalism was discovered Sept. 6.

Fortunately, city street department employees found the piece that was broken off half a block away, according to Veronica Litterer, director of Charles City Community Revitalization.

"It looks like the piece will be repairable at this point," she said.

The sculpture, titled "Reading Girl," as well as the other three commissioned public art pieces in Central Park are insured by the city.

The pieces were commissioned by the Charles City Community Revitalization Public Art Committee as part of a larger Central Park improvement project.

The Francis A. Beckman family donated the money for the art pieces.

"Reading Girl," created by sculptor Meg White, sits on the corner of Jackson Street and Blunt Street, across from the community child care center. It is meant to represent education.

A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the damage to the "Reading Girl" sculpture.

Anyone who has information is asked to call the Charles City Police Department Tipline at 641-257-6303.
