DES MOINES -- Iowa Gov. Chet Culver announced this afternoon that eight new counties had been added to the state's disaster list after another round of storms this weekend led to widespread flooding in parts of the state.
Mitchell, Clayton, Kossuth, Wright, Hamilton, Bremer, Linn and Iowa counties joined 31 counties that already had been put on the governor's emergency proclamation. The proclamation allows state resources to be used at no cost to local governments.
Assistance to low-income individuals in those counties on the proclamation list is available in the form of grants of up to $3,300.
Those with household incomes of up to 130 percent of federal poverty guidelines are eligible to apply for assistance. Applicants must provide receipts of disaster-related expenses when applying for help.
Counties already on the list include Fremont, Page, Montgomery, Adams, Union, Clarke, Marion, Johnson, Jasper, Polk, Dallas, Crawford, Boone, Story, Marshall, Tama, Benton, Dubuque, Delaware, Buchanan, Black Hawk, Hardin, Webster, Humboldt, Franklin, Butler, Cerro Gordo, Floyd, Chickasaw, Winneshiek and Worth counties.
