ST. LOUIS - The University of Northern Iowa football squad had four members named to the 2008 Missouri Valley Football Conference's All-Newcomer team.
All four of the Panthers named to the team came on the offensive side of the ball. Redshirt freshman wide receiver Josh Collins, redshirt freshman quarterback Zach Davis, redshirt freshman offensive tackle Jay Teply and true freshman wide receiver Jarred Herring all earned a spot on league's All-Newcomer squad.
Collins (Sioux City, Iowa/Sioux City West HS) leads the team with 406 receiving yards. He ranks third on the team with 23 receptions through 13 games. Collins secured the first 100-plus receiving game in his first collegiate game at BYU when he tallied three catches for 114 yards and a score. Collins has also returned nine punts for 93 yards (10.3 yards/return).
Davis (Washington, Iowa/Washington HS) is 3-0 as a starting quarterback for the Panthers and all three starts came on the road against league competition - at Youngstown State, at Western Illinois and at Indiana State. Davis has seen action in six games and has passed for 496 yards and three touchdowns. Davis passed for a season-high 191 yards on 13-of-21 passing including a 33-yard touchdown pass to Schuylar Oordt on a fourth-down play against Western Illinois.
Herring (Burlington, Iowa/Burlington HS) ranks first in the MVFC in kick return average (26.3 yards/return). Herring registered a season-long return of 70 yards in a 23-13 win over North Dakota State. He returned four kicks for 150 yards against the Bison. Herring leads the Panthers with 18 kick returns for 473 yards. Herring secured his first 100-plus receiving effort in an NCAA FCS first-round playoff win over Maine. Herring boasted a game-high 102 yards receiving with two key touchdown receptions of 42 and 55 yards in the 40-15 triumph over the Black Bears. Herring is tied for the team lead with three touchdown receptions in 2008. He ranks fourth on the team with 693 all-purpose yards.
Teply (Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier HS) started seven games at right tackle and helped the UNI ground game average nearly 200 yards per game. He has helped limit the opposition to only 12 sacks of UNI quarterbacks this season.
Youngstown State quarterback Brandon Summers was named the league's Newcomer of the Year, while the Penguins' running back Kamryn Keys was named the MVFC's Freshman of the Year.
