WATERLOO - A Waterloo man has been charged with attempted murder after his infant son was hospitalized with a severe laceration to his abdomen.

Waterloo Police Captain John Beckman said the call came in at around 3:15 p.m. Thursday that an infant had been assaulted with a kitchen knife.

Police reports say Jamie Lockhart, 31, assaulted his 8-day-old son, James Lockhart, in their home at 1109 Randolph St. Thursday afternoon. The boy was transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, where he is in stable condition.

Lockhart was arrested and charged this afternoon, police said. He is being held at the Black Hawk County Jail on a $200,000 bond.
