WATERLOO -- Engraved commemorative bricks from Allen Hospital's Dack Hall are available for purchase. The Allen Foundation has saved 400 bricks from the building.
Purchased bricks will be engraved "Allen School of Nursing Est. 1925 Waterloo, IA."
A brick can be purchased for $50 to cover the cost of hand cleaning and engraving, packing and shipping. Contact Allen Foundation at (319) 235-3960 to purchase a Dack Hall brick. If there is any profit from the sale of the bricks, it will go directly to the Promises to Keep Campaign for AllenCare. Orders should be placed promptly. All orders are subject to the availability of the bricks.
Dack Hall came down in September to make way for the new Allen Emergency Room and Allen Heart and Vascular Center. The building first housed classrooms and a dormitory for the former Allen Memorial Hospital Lutheran School of Nursing, now Allen College. Since then it had been the location of numerous hospital departments and services.
"Dack Hall held memories for many people," says Jim Waterbury, Allen vice-president institutional advancement. "We want everyone to know we treated the building with respect. The work crew remarked how well-built it had been, and they did a careful job of cleaning the site and leaving it looking good."
