OTTUMWA - A 14-year-old boy was injured when his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Highway 63 in Wapello County Wednesday afternoon.
Nathaniel Wade Walden, of Batesville, Ark., was being treated at Ottumwa Regional Hospital.
The Iowa State Patrol said Walden and another unnamed bicyclist, along with pickup driver Mitchell E. Fulton, 19, of Richland, were eastbound on Highway 63 near mile marker 43 north of Ottumwa when Fulton was distracted by a vehicle in the passing lane.
The pickup veered onto the edge of the roadway and struck the bicycle closest to him.
Troopers said the two bicyclists were riding on the edge of the roadway between the fog line and the edge of the shoulder and were wearing reflective clothing. The accident occurred about 4:50 p.m.
