DES MOINES (AP) - First District U.S. Rep. Bruce Braley of Waterloo underwent a procedure Thursday to remove skin cancer from his right cheek.

The first-term Democrat was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a common skin cancer, last week after a routine checkup.

Doctors surgically removed the growth, which is under Braley's right eye, at Covenant Medical Center's outpatient center in Waterloo, said Jeff Giertz, a spokesman for Braley.

"The doctor indicated … the procedure was successful," Giertz said. "They'll be following up with tests and everything and analyzing the carcinoma they removed to determine if there are any other procedures that need to be done. But things are looking very good right now."

Braley may have a black eye for a couple of days, Giertz said.

Braley will attend scheduled events Friday in Cedar Falls and Davenport and said he expects to make a full recovery.
