COLUMBUS, Ohio - University of Northern Iowa senior Jordan Weber stands 10 shots off the lead in a tie for 106th place after firing an opening-round 79 Thursday at the NCAA Central Regional on Ohio State's Scarlet Course.
The final competitor to tee off in the first round, Weber is eight strokes over par after the first 18 holes of the 54-hole tournament. Wake Forest's Brendan Gielow is the first-round leader at two under par after carding a 69 on the opening day of competition.
Gielow was the only player to shoot under 70 on the day, with the average score of the 141 competitors a 76.54.
Wake Forest leads the team race after shooting a combined score of 290 that has the Demon Deacons six over par and two strokes ahead of Alabama, which registered a score of 292.
One of six individual players selected to compete in the Central Regional, Weber was one of three individuals to shoot a 79 in the first round. Chris Baker of Iowa State was the top individual competitor over the first 18 holes, firing a 73 that has him tied for 17th.
Second-round play gets under way at 6 a.m. Central time today, with each participant playing an additional 18 holes on the Scarlet Course.
