SIOUX CITY - A Sioux City woman injured in a fire last weekend has died.
Chonburi "Sarah" Louangrath, 27, died Monday at a local hospital, bringing to three the number of people killed in fires this year in Sioux City.
Prior to this year, it had been eight years since anyone died in a Sioux City fire.
Sioux City Fire Department spokesman Joe Rodriguez said officials have determined a cause of the fire, but are not releasing it at this time. He said it was accidental and started on the couch in the living room.
At 12:49 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were called to Louangrath's burning rental home at 3112 First St. They rescued her from a second-floor hallway.
Louangrath's 6-year-old son had run to warn a neighbor of the blaze, and an adult male, Damien Bruce, also escaped from the house.
All three were taken to Mercy Medical Center - Sioux City.
This is the second fatal fire this spring, coming after a March 1 fire at 711 Leonard St.
Authorities say careless smoking caused the fire that killed Rodney R. Prichard, 48, and Donald E. Listman, 59, in the Leonard Street fire.
Rodriguez said the fires should remind residents to check their smoke detectors and formulate an escape plan.
"Check (the detectors) monthly," he said, "because fires can happen: anytime, anyplace, anywhere."
