CLINTON - The fired city manager from Independence is one of five finalists for the vacant city administrator job in Clinton.

Alan Johnson of Independence was fired last month after the Independence City Council voted 5-2 to allow his contract to expire. The decision came after a special meeting July 2 after some residents raised concerns about his job performance.

Johnson had been on the job in Independence since 2001 after the city switched to a manager-council form of government. He previously worked in Sheldon as city manager.

The other finalists are Jeffrey Horne, city administrator in Mitchellville; Gregory Seefeldt, city administrator in Denison; David Van Dee, former city administrator of Hiawatha; and Tom Roth, Camanche's first city administrator.

The five candidates will be interviewed by the City Council in closed session on today and Thursday morning before the list will be narrowed to two or three, Mayor Rodger Holm said. The city will then conduct extensive background checks on the final candidates before making a decision.

The city administrator job in Clinton became vacant in June when Gary Boden abruptly resigned.
