SIOUX CITY - Greg Jolley's 12-year-old daughter said Monday at her father's plea and sentencing hearing that she may one day forgive him but that she will never forget the abuse he and his wife inflicted on her and her 8-year-old brother last summer in a dark room in their rural Lawton home.

"We were so afraid in that room in the dark," the girl said in a victim impact statement she read from the stand. "We were so hungry and thirsty."

Greg Jolley, 42, was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for beating his son and daughter and locking them in a second-floor room without food and water. He pleaded guilty Monday in Woodbury County District Court to two counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury, a class D felony. Jolley was originally charged with two counts of neglect of a dependant person, a class C felony.

"I spanked them on their bottoms causing bruises," Jolley, dressed in an orange jumpsuit, told District Judge John Ackerman.

Ackerman called attorneys from both sides to the bench while Jolley, slumped over in his chair, shook his head.

After a brief discussion with his lawyer, Peter Parry, Jolley admitted that while disciplining his children, he struck them on their bottoms, causing bruising.

When asked by Ackerman if he knew he was creating a substantial physical health or safety risk that resulted in bodily injury to his children, Jolley said, "Yes."

Jolley's daughter said her father locked her in a "dark room" without food and water; forced her to drink her own urine and "did nothing to protect me from the kicks, slap and punches" of his wife.

"I thank God for the strength he gave me to climb out that window and slide to the ground," the girl said.

Last month a Woodbury County judge sentenced Kimberly Jolley to three consecutive five-year sentences. She pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury for allowing Greg Jolley to beat his two children.

On Monday, a guardian ad litem read a statement from Jolley's son. The boy, who is undergoing intensive therapy, was not present in the courtroom.

"He would yell at us a lot and hit us. Throw peanut butter sandwiches at us," he wrote. "I never want to see my dad because he's mean. I don't think he loved us because of what he did to us."

Ackerman imposed the sentence as laid out in the plea agreement but told Jolley that he will write a letter to the Iowa Department of Corrections and ask officials to keep him in custody as long as possible because of his lack remorse for the horrendous acts he committed.

Jolley was sentenced to five years' imprisonment on each count. The sentences will run consecutively for a term not to exceed 10 years. Ackerman ordered Jolley to pay court costs and fees, as well as restitution in an amount not yet determined to his children, whom he is not allowed to contact for five years. A $750 fine and surcharges were suspended.
