JESUP - The American Red Cross said it had set up shelters for some Jesup residents who were evacuated from their homes when a train detrailed there Sunday.
The derailment occurred on Canadian National Railway tracks in the downtown area near the Co-op and a six-block area was closed off. Courier staff at the scene were told some cars carrying ethanol may have been involved. There was no leaking or spillage and no injuries were reported according to fire authorities. About a dozen residents were evacuated as a precaution.
The Red Cross said early Sunday evening it had opened shelters for evacuated residents at the Presbyterian Church at 643 Sixth St., and the American Lutheran Church, 552 Purdy St. An emergency response vehicle was dispatched to aid displaced residents and emergency workers. Fire officials most displaced residents went to homes of friends or family.
The derailment's cause has not yet been determined.
