CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - A woman was convicted of second-degree murder on Friday for giving her husband an overdose of insulin.

Kimberly Chiavetta, 38, had no visible reaction to the verdict handed down by a Linn County District Court jury.

Police said Chiavetta intentionally injected her husband, Frank Chiavetta, 60, with a lethal amount of insulin July 8, 2004. He died three days later. She was charged with first-degree murder and administering a harmful substance.

Defense attorneys argued that Kimberly Chiavetta committed involuntary manslaughter when she injected her non-diabetic husband with insulin to help him rest.

Prosecutors argued that Chiavetta, a registered nurse, planned ahead and gathered supplies for days or weeks before she twice intentionally injected her sleeping husband with insulin that put him into a coma.

Sentencing was set for Nov. 16.
