OTTUMWA (AP) - Some production areas of a meatpacking plant, where a man died in an accident last week remained shut down as investigators continued to look into the cause.
Paul McCrory, 41, died Wednesday in an accident at the Cargill Meat Solutions plant, a pork processing plant. Authorities said he was trapped for about 40 minutes when a rail on a conveyor system collapsed. He was taken to Ottumwa Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"The investigation is continuing with OSHA being at the plant, and were not going to do any of the repairs until this initial part of the investigation is done," Cargill spokesman Mark Klein said on Friday. "That will take as long as it takes to get the answers. So given that, we cant accurately predict when well start the repairs and then be back in operation."
Klein said he could not offer an estimate of when the slaughter operation would resume.
"I appreciate that people would like something more definite, but getting the initial investigation done right is what's important…rather than getting back up and running," he said.
As for allegations that McCrory had warned the company about a potential hazard, Klein said the company and investigators are paying attention to many details.
"Were going to look into every angle," he said. "Were not going to ignore anything."
