Area residents killed in traffic accidents

WATERLOO - Two area residents died in separate vehicle accidents Friday, one in Benton County and one in southern Minnesota.

An Iowa Falls woman died in a head-on collision about two miles north of the Iowa/Minnesota border near Albert Lea just before 8 p.m.

According to Minnesota State Patrol reports, June Modlin, 54, was critically injured when the truck she was riding in was struck by the driver of another pickup truck who crossed the median on Interstate 35.

Modlin was one of four people in 2001 Ford Pickup truck. The driver, Thomas M. Merklin, 61, also of Iowa Falls, was uninjured. Passengers Teagun J. Sunde, 11, no address given was also seriously injured in the crash, and Tayla M. Sunde, 15, no address given, was treated for injuries and released, according to reports.

The driver of the vehicle that crossed the median, Andy J. Kubena, 35, Maplewood, Minn., was also critically injured in the collision, state patrol reports show.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

A Newhall man died when the motorcycle he was driving went off the road in Benton County at about 11:30 p.m. Friday. According to the Iowa State Patrol, James Charles Rich, 61, was killed when he rolled the 2006 Kawk motorcycle he was driving into a ditch about a mile north of Newhall. Rich was driving north on 27th Avenue and went off the road at a curve near 70th Street, the crash report shows.

Rich was pronounced dead at the scene by the Benton County Medical Examiner.
