WEST LIBERTY (AP) - Sheriff's officers removed dozens of dogs from a rural West Liberty residence Friday after receiving a tip that the animals were being kept in an unhealthy environment.
Muscatine County Humane Society Director Chris McGinnis said the owner of the residence has raised dogs for years and the operation is state certified, but she described it as a puppy m;ill.
McGinnis said she was first called to the site three years ago and found 35 dogs located in a barn without water on a 100-degree day. She said the conditions she found Friday were even more deplorable.
Muscatine County officers and officials from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources seized 91 dogs, which overwhelmed the county animal shelter. The dogs were being treated and housed in garages behind the animal shelter.
McGinnis said one of the dogs had to be euthanized, but she hopes the rest can be saved.
No charges were immediately filed.
McGinnis said the dogs will be kept at the animal shelter as an investigation continues and any court proceedings are completed.
She said the dogs will be put up for adoption if the humane society can retain custody.
