WATERLOO - A Waterloo man was taken to the hospital following an early afternoon shooting in one of two reports of gunfire Tuesday.

The victim, whose name wasn't immediately available, had a single gunshot wound to his leg and was found in a red Buick that officers stopped just in front of the police station at about 2:30 p.m., said Capt. John Beckman.

He said the injuries don't appear to be life threatening.

Investigators are still trying to sort out the details, but authorities believe the shooting happened in the area of West Ninth and Washington while the victim was outside the Buick.

The victim then got in the Buick with two other people and drove off, and a black passenger car that was involved also left from the area, Beckman said.

Police pulled over the red Buick at the intersection of East 6th and Mulberry streets. The victim was put in an ambulance and driven to a local hospital, and the three others in the car were taken across the street to the police station for interviews, Beckman said.

The black car remained at large, Beckman said.

At about that time, officers were sent to a report of gunshots in the area of East Fourth and Newell streets. No injuries were reported in that incident, and it wasn't clear if it was related to the prior shooting, Beckman said.
