CALAMUS- A Clinton man sustained minor injuries during a deer hunting accident opening weekend of Iowa's first deer hunting shotgun season Saturday.
Dale Rowson, 53, was taken to Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton following the accident around 11 a.m. Reports indicated the incident happened near Calamus in western Clinton County. State conservation officers said Rowson was hunting with a group of five when a deer slug apparently ricotched off the ground, grazed a pant leg on his right leg and entered his left leg calf.
Authorities said the injury was not life threatening. The incident is under investigation, but it appears to be accidental and citations are not likely.
State officials are investigating another apparent accidental shooting in Union County.
An Arispe man was treated and released for injures sustained in a deer hunting accident in Union County late Saturday afternoon.
David Cheers, 41, was taken to the Greater Regional Medical Center in Creston following the incident Saturday around 3 p.m. Initial reports indicate Cheers was posted along a road hunting deer when a slug from a shotgun struck him in the lower abdomen. The slug did not penetrate, but did cause enough injury to require medical attention. He was transported to the hospital by fellow hunters.
