LATIMER - One person is dead after a small plane crashed in northern Iowa.

Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Corey says the plane went down just after 1:30 p.m. Friday near Latimer in Franklin County.

Corey says only one person was on board when the single-engine Cessna 172 crashed.

There is no immediate word on where the flight originated or its destination.

Witnesses reported a small plane crashed near the 170 mile marker of Interstate 35 at about 1:30 p.m., according to Franklin County emergency dispatchers..

Crews from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Hampton Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Latimer Fire Department, West Franklin EMS and Franklin General Ambulance were sent to the scene, a dispatcher said.
