DES MOINES (AP) - An 8-year-old Ankeny boy was struck and killed on a foggy highway north of Denison Friday morning.
Police say Brevin Kramer was standing on the west shoulder of state Highway 59 at about 10:15 a.m. with his father when Lonnie Pitts, driving a 2006 Ford F-150 pulling a tractor, saw Brevin walk into the road.
"It was chaos and chaos," Dana Boeck, Brevin's uncle, told The Des Moines Register. "It was very, very foggy. Visibility was near zero. The wind was whipping things around a bit. It masked the sound of the vehicles as they went by the road. You couldn't hear what was coming."
Police say the roadway was 100 percent foggy. Pitts tried to slow down and drove into the opposite lane, but still struck the boy head-on.
"One minute he's here and the next he was gone" Boeck told the Register. "He was always charged. He was full of life. He will be missed."
Pitts, of Council Bluffs, has not been charged.
