WATERLOO - The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating a confrontation where a Waterloo officer fired at a suspect who almost ran him over.
No injuries were reported in the incident, which unfolded outside the Iowa Parole Office in the 500 block of East Fifth Street this morning, said Capt. John Beckman with the Waterloo Police Department.
Police initially were called to the parole office for Deon Lemar Mosley, 38, a parolee at the building who had an outstanding warrant, Beckman said.
Mosley apparently learned he was about to be arrested and left the office just as the Waterloo officer pulled up, Beckman said.
When the officer walked toward the suspect, the suspect got in his own vehicle and drove at the officer, Beckman said.
"The officer had two choices - stand there and get run over or get out of the way," Beckman said.
He said the officer fired at the car as he evaded it, Beckman said.
He wasn't sure how many shots were fired but believed some of the bullets struck the car.
A short vehicle chase ensued, and the suspect bailed out of his car in the area of Iowa and Dane streets. He was apprehended a shot time later in the 500 block of Dane Street without further incident.
Mosley was taken to the Black Hawk County Jail where he is being held on a parole violation warrant with a bond of $75,000. Neither the officer nor Mosley were injured during this incident.
It is standard procedure for the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation to probe officer-involved shootings.
