WAVERLY- A 16-year-old Dumont boy is recovering from injuries sustained late Saturday in a raccoon hunting accident near Waverly, state conservation law enforcement officials reported Sunday.

Mathew Allen was pursuing raccoons with a group of hunters at Cedar Bend Park north of Waverly when the accident happened around 11:20 p.m. Reports indicate Allen crossed a fence, and had turned to help hunting dogs cross when he stumbled and fell. The fall caused the .22-caliber pistol he had holstered to his side to discharge.

The bullet entered the upper thigh of his right leg. Allen was taken to the Waverly Health Center where he is being treated for his injuries. The injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The incident remains under investigation.
