WATERLOO -- Two Waterloo men have been convicted in federal court on unrelated gun charges.
Gabriel Mangum, 33, of Waterloo, was convicted Thursday of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Magnum was previously convicted on a 1995 first-degree robbery charge. On Dec. 11, 2008, he allegedly was found by a Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies to have a loaded gun in his pocket as he was arrested on state charges in connection with an investigation of a large check forgery operation.
In an unrelated case, James Williams, 49, of Waterloo also was convicted of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Williams has previously been convicted in 1993 on a third-degree burglary charge. On Dec. 31, 2007, Waterloo police questioned Williams in connnection with an alleged domestic assault complaint. Prosecutors said he denied the asault but admitted he possessed a weapon, consented to a search and showed officers a .38 revolver and ammunition in a portable safe under his bed.
U.S. Attorney Matt Dummermuth said he and Black Hawk County Attorney Tom Ferguson are "taking a hard line approach to gun crime" in the county.
