FAYETTE - A 4-year-old Fayette girl is hospitalized at University Hospitals in Iowa City after being trapped beneath an overturned canoe on the Volga River Sunday afternoon.
Octavia George was rescued by other members of their outing and given CPR at the scene. Her parents, Nigel and Julie George, and 3-year-old brother, Isaac, were transported to Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.
Her condition was listed as critical this morning.
The other five members of the party continued down the Volga River following the rescue and were checked over by the Northeast Iowa Ambulance staff when they reached an exit point. There were no other injuries.
Authorities were called to the area about 2:30 p.m. after receiving a cell phone report of a drowining on the Volga River. The reporting party did not know where they were on the river, except that they were between Big Rock Country Club and the Volga River Recreation Area. A search was conducted and the people were located inside the Volga River Recreation Area.
The Fayette County Sheiff's Office said a canoe had overturned, trapping the 4-year-old underneath.
Several agencies were involved in the incident, including the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Fayette Fire Department, Fayette Ambulance Service and the other agencies already named.
