EVANSTON, Ill. - The Cy-Hawk battle extended beyond Iowa's borders Tuesday.

Iowa's wrestlers overcame Iowa State with a late, championship-round surge to win the prestigious Midlands Championship, accumulating 156 1/2 team points. The Cyclones ended with 153 1/2 points. Northern Iowa, meanwhile, placed 12th with 49 points.

The Hawkeyes claimed their 20th Midlands team title, crowning three individual champions: Daniel Dennis (133 pounds), Brent Metcalf (149) and Ryan Morningstar (165).

The Hawkeyes and Cyclones squared off in the day's most controversial decision at 165. Morningstar trailed Iowa State's Jon Reader, 4-1, late. Reader was then awarded a takedown by one referee before another official overruled the decision, extending the match's sudden victory process. Morningstar eventually escaped with just four seconds left in the extra session for a 5-4 victory.

At 133, Iowa's Dennis used a second-period takedown to escape a third-period reversal by Iowa State's Nick Fanthorpe. As a result, Dennis prevailed, scoring a key, 4-3 decision in the title match.

Iowa's Metcalf earned the tournament's Highest Point Total award, registering 27 team points during the two-day event.

Iowa and Iowa State each placed five wrestlers into championship competition, and Iowa State held a slight lead in the team standings entering the finals.

"We learned a lot from this tournament," Iowa State coach Cael Sanderson said. "We are disappointed but we are working our way toward March. As anyone will tell you, that is when it counts."

Northern Iowa watched four of its grapplers work their way to the medal stand, led by Moza Fay's third-place finish at 165. Teammates Tyson Reiner (157), Charlie Ettelson (149) and Christian Brantley (285) all placed eighth for UNI.

"Moza," said Panther coach Brad Penrith, "wrestled like an animal.

"It was a great day because we went out and competed."
