WATERLOO - A torrential downpour drenched Black Hawk County Monday night knocking down several trees and power lines in its path.
The National Weather Service in Des Moines reported about 1.4 inches of rain fell in the metro area, but as much as 2 inches fell in outlying areas like Tripoli. Steve Teachout with the National Weather Service said the totals are for a 24-hour period, but most of the rain fell between 7 p.m. and midnight.
The storm brought with it fierce winds that ranged in speed from 60 to 70 mph. Teachout said winds topping 70 mph were clocked at the Waterloo Regional Airport just after 7 p.m.
The storm knocked out power to 821 customers for varying lengths of time and caused "blips" in service to nearly 2,000 in the Waterloo area, according to MidAmerican Energy Co., the largest electricity supplier in the area.
"All of those outages were weather-related, due to lightning, trees falling on lines and some blown fuses," said Ann Thelen, spokeswoman for the utility. "
Most of the outages occurred between 7 and 8 p.m. and were shortlived, Thelen said.
However, as of 9:10 a.m. today, there were still 27 outages in Waterloo and one each in Littleton and Charles City.
"We had a lot of single outages, too, but the largest concentration was a group of 34 between Rose Hill Terrace and Hilltop Road; 92 between Beverly Hills Street and Carriage Hill Drive; and 24 in the area of South View Drive and Nicholas Street," Thelen said.
Waterloo Fire Rescue reported a half-dozen power lines downed by tree limbs during the storm all over Waterloo. Damage was also reported north of Cedar Falls, according to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office. The Cedar Falls Fire Department responded to about a dozen calls for downed power lines throughout the evening Tuesday. One call to the 6500 block of North Union Road was for a downed power line and tree on fire about 11 p.m.
More rain is possible today, though Teachout said most would fall south of Interstate 80.
