IOWA CITY (AP) - Movie star and native Iowan Ashton Kutcher made a stop in Iowa City on Friday night to help raise money for flood relief and cheer on his beloved Hawkeyes.

Kutcher - with wife Demi Moore in tow - and Olympic gold medal gymnast Shawn Johnson, from West Des Moines, headlined a series of charity events to raise funds for the Iowa Flood Relief Fund.

Proceeds will go toward recovery efforts for Iowans affected by June's flooding, with a focus on helping small businesses in eastern Iowa.

"The idea is that, if we can raise enough money to sort of reinvigorate those businesses, then we can reinvigorate the commerce, thereby reinvigorate the jobs and thereby creating an economic possibility for people to rebuild themselves," Kutcher told The Associated Press.

Kutcher, who spent a year at the University of Iowa, attended the Iowa State-Iowa basketball game Friday night and, along with Johnson, hosted a charity meet-and-greets with fans.

Kutcher also planned to host a viewing of his new film, "Personal Effects," at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City after the game.

The events are a joint venture between Mediacom, the Big Ten Network and the University of Iowa. Proceeds will be split between the Community Foundation of Johnson County and the Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation.

Kutcher, who lived in nearby Cedar Rapids until he was 13 before moving to nearby Homestead, and got a rousing standing ovation from the crowd before the game.

The actor still has family in the area, though he said they weren't directly affected by flooding.

"There isn't a lot of awareness about the effects of the flood," Kutcher said. "People saw the water come up and thought it would come down and OK, yeah you dry out your house and then, there you go. That's not how it is."

Kutcher said he's a "pretty big" Hawkeyes fan, keeping track of Iowa's sports team through his subscription to the Big Ten Network and on the internet.

He also weighed in on the Heisman Trophy race by making a pitch for Iowa running back Shonn Greene - who won the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back but wasn't invited to the Heisman presentation in New York City.

"I'm pretty happy with Shonn Greene right now," Kutcher said. "He should have been invited to New York."
